The U.S. Sentencing Commission has stiffened penalties for steroid use and distribution. The Commission has proposed that temporary emergency changes it made to steroid sentencing guidelines become permanent. Under the new guidelines established in March, sentencing for steroid use and distribution are now the same as other Schedule III drugs, which include substances such as LSD. The guidelines also provide for additional penalties for the use of masking agents and for coaches who pressure athletes into using steroids.
