HIWU Laboratory Manager

Horseracing Integrity and Welfare Unit (HIWU)

Position Focus:     The HIWU Laboratory Manager is a dynamic, people-centric member of the Horseracing Integrity & Welfare Unit (HIWU), a division of Drug Free Sport International/International Doping Tests & Management (DFSI-IDTM). This individual will operate in a fast-paced work environment, assisting the science team by overseeing relationship management of contracted laboratories.

Summary of Qualifications:     To successfully perform this role, the HIWU Laboratory Manager will uphold the company core values and vision, demonstrate integrity to the highest degree, and have a passion to serve the Thoroughbred horse racing industry, clients, and colleagues by providing excellent service.

Essential requirements include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a scientific field or equivalent experience
  • 4+ years of laboratory support and/or client management experience
  • High proficiency with software programs including Microsoft Suite and laboratory information management system
  • Ability to understand laboratory anti-doping service and maintenance business
  • Experience with designing, pricing, implementing and leading lab service and maintenance programs
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Effective project management
  • Strong attention to detail, exceptional organizational skills, and the ability to work independently
  • Proven track record of producing high-quality work under tight deadlines
  • Positive relationship development and management skills with 3rd party service providers
  • Customer contracting and scope of work development experience
  • Pass a pre-employment screening including drug test, background check, confidentiality agreement, degree(s) verification, and professional reference checks

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Master of Business Administration
  • Project Management Professional certification
  • Laboratory experience
  • Knowledge of equine or Thoroughbred industry

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide excellent service by maintaining strong, positive working relationships and consistent communication with laboratories and vendors.
  • Oversee contractual agreements including ongoing negotiations and pricing discussions.
  • Facilitate logistical support including but not limited to:
  • Results turnaround and IT-related issues
  • Track lab performance and volumes including compliant and standardized equipment
  • Ensure accuracy of reporting and laboratory invoices
  • Collaborate with database developers and analysist to ensure HIWU’s database systems support laboratory requirements
  • Team with internal and external personnel to ensure accurate projections for required supplies and equipment and monitor inventory as necessary; establish shipping schedules and ensure compliance with HIWU policies and procedures.
  • Liaison between developer partner and laboratories including but not limited to:
  • Develop and foster relationships
  • Event reporting and analysis
  • Report management
  • Monitor and collaborate with applicable staff to address collection personnel performance issues, non-conformities or discrepancies that arise to ensure resolution and minimize recurrence.
  • Perform other related duties, as assigned.
