Adolescent athletes present unique challenges to ensure proper fueling for exercise as well as continued growth. Demanding schedules and social pressures to perform and attain a desired body image can influence both food preferences and availability. Studies reveal a lack of nutrition knowledge among high school students, and a concerning trend of increasing dietary supplement use among adolescent athletes to achieve certain performance and appearance goals. Addressing concerns and challenges unique to high school athletes is a critical step in helping athletic trainers and other sport personnel guide athletes toward appropriate and optimal nutrition choices for fueling competition and development.

At the end of this presentation, attendees will be better able to:

1. Summarize the direct fueling needs for high school athletes
2. Identify barriers/challenges to optimal fueling for adolescent athletes
3. Create an action plan for better fueling for high school athletes

Target Audience: ATs, RDs, CSCS, and other sports medicine or athlete support staff
