ABOUT:

This webinar aims to review a variety of topics related to the use of opioid medications in sport including the prevalence, place in therapy, recreational use and signs of misuse, and legal considerations. With a clinical pharmacist perspective, Dr. Cannon will share insights into the pharmacology of opioids and provide pearls to ensure appropriate use and prevent misuse in sports.

At the end of this presentation, attendees will be better able to:

  1. Identify common opioids (narcotics) used in sport,
  2. Recognize signs of opioid misuse and symptoms of opioid overdose.
  3. Summarize strategies to prevent opioid misuse.
  4. Compare the prohibited status of opioids based on the World Anti-doping Agency and NCAA policies.

Athena Cannon, PharmD

Dr. Athena Cannon is an ambulatory care trained pharmacist at Indian Health Board of Minneapolis in Minneapolis, Minnesota, a sports pharmacy consultant with Drug Free Sport International, and the founder of the U.S. Sports Pharmacy Group. She completed her pharmacy prerequisites at the University of Texas at Arlington, Doctor of Pharmacy at Texas Tech Health Sciences Center Jerry H. Hodge School of Pharmacy in Abilene, Texas, and the Pharmaceutical Leadership Residency at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. She has had unique experiences working with and learning from various sports medicine organizations including the U.S. Anti-doping Agency, Texas Tech University Athletics, Partnership for Clean Competition, Minnesota Athletic Trainer’s Association, and sports medicine clinics within the Twin Cities. She has served as an expert in the field of sports pharmacy through research, lecturing, consulting, and committee work nationally and internationally.

 

Drug Free Sport International (BOC AP# P8729) is approved by the Board of Certification, Inc. to provide continuing education to Athletic Trainers. This program is eligible for a maximum of 1.25 Category A hours/CEUs. ATs should claim only those hours actually spent in the session.
