Join us and Dr. Athena Cannon, PharmD to discuss prescription stimulants and sport. Dr. Cannon will share her professional experience and provide advice to prevent inadvertent use or misuse.

At the end of this presentation, attendees will be better able to:

  1. Recognize common stimulants (prescription, non-prescription, and recreational) used by the athletic population.
  2. Differentiate between medical and non-medical use of stimulants in sport.
  3. Describe two signs or symptoms of stimulant misuse.
  4. List three clinical pearls to ensure appropriate use of prescribed stimulants.

PharmD

Dr. Athena Cannon is an ambulatory care trained pharmacist at Indian Health Board Medical Clinic in Minneapolis, Minnesota, a sports pharmacy consultant with Drug Free Sport International, and the founding Chair of the U.S. Sports Pharmacy Group. She completed her pharmacy prerequisites at the University of Texas at Arlington and Doctor of Pharmacy at Texas Tech Health Sciences Center Jerry H. Hodge School of Pharmacy in Abilene, Texas. She has had unique experiences working with and learning from various sports medicine organizations including the U.S. Anti-doping Agency, Texas Tech University Athletics, Partnership for Clean Competition, Minnesota Athletic Trainer’s Association, and sports medicine clinics within the Twin Cities. She has served as an expert in the field of sports pharmacy through research, lecturing, consulting, and committee work nationally and internationally. 

 

Drug Free Sport International (BOC AP# P8729) is approved by the Board of Certification, Inc. to provide continuing education to Athletic Trainers. This program is eligible for a maximum of 1.25 Category A hours/CEUs. ATs should claim only those hours actually spent in the session.
